The city centre of Bristol is only 8 miles from the airport and you may consider breaking up your journey or if you are staying overnight take the opportunity to visit the city of Bristol. The city is built on hills overlooking the magnificent harbour and estuary which is the focal point.

One of Bristol's most famous landmarks the Clifton suspension bridge was constructed by its most famous inhabitant Isambard Kingdom Brunel who also built S.S. Great Britain the first screw driven propelled iron ship and the first purpose built railway station at Temple Meads in the centre of Bristol. Both survive today and S.S. Great Britain now resides in its original dry dock next to the Matthew, which was the vessel John Cabot sailed to North America in 1497 on his way to discovering New Foundland. From John Cabot's tower you can see nearly all the city and its panoramic harbour.

The City museum, Bristol Industrial museum and art gallery are well worth a visit for artefacts, hieroglyphics and Oriental collection. The Bristol Industrial Museum displays full scale turbines and a model of Concorde pilot cabin.

Bristol Zoo has always been popular with adults and children and is set in 12 acres with a huge collection of mammals, fish, reptiles and birds.

For retail therapy Bristol offers the Broadmead and The Mall Galleries shopping centres and on the outskirts of the city The Mall at Cribbs Causeway at junction 17 off the M5 housing 135 outlets and 18 cafes and restaurants.

Bristol's shopping offers lots of choice, catering for the most eclectic of tastes and all budgets from pocket money to big spenders. In the centre of Bristol, Broadmead and The Mall Galleries boast an enticing range of shops with all the familiar high street names and specialist independent stores, and plans are well underway for a major expansion. On the outskirts, The Mall at Cribbs Causeway is at Junction 17 of the M5. It's an ultra-convenient shopping-friendly complex with over 135 stores and over 17 cafes and restaurants, all under one very big roof. There is a farmers market every Wednesday and an old fashioned market at the Corn Exchange.
